The fight to end obesity demands a fresh perspective. Health care professionals and our communities need to move beyond outdated thinking and recognize obesity as the complex disease it is. And by treating people with the understanding and support they deserve in their journey to better health, we can take the first crucial step in reducing its prevalence.
AIMS AND OBJECTS OF CORN:
Aim
The aim of the Clinical Obesity and Research Network (CORN) shall be to advance the science, clinical understanding, and multidisciplinary management of obesity through the promotion of dissemination of evidence-based practices, research, professional collaboration, and advocacy for public health impact.
Objectives
The objectives of Clinical Obesity and Research Network (CORN) shall be:-
1. To promote the development and dissemination of evidence-based clinical practices for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of obesity and its associated comorbidities.
2. To establish a collaborative and interdisciplinary platform for clinicians, researchers, academicians, public health professionals, and policymakers working in the domain of obesity and metabolic disorders.
3. To organize scientific meetings, symposia, workshops, and educational initiatives for the exchange of knowledge, dissemination of research findings, and advancement of clinical competencies.
4. To facilitate, support, and conduct high-quality scientific research in the fields of clinical obesity, metabolic health, and related disciplines.
5. To advocate for the integration of scientific evidence into public health policy and contribute to the formulation of national and regional strategies for obesity prevention and management.
6. To foster the professional development of members and the wider scientific community, including students, trainees, and early-career professionals, through mentorship, training programs, and academic resources.
7. To encourage the incorporation of a multidisciplinary approach, encompassing endocrinology, Diabetology, nutrition, psychology, surgery, exercise science, and public health, in addressing the complex nature of obesity.
8. To collaborate with national and international organizations, societies, and academic institutions for mutual advancement in obesity research and clinical excellency.
As of 2022, approximately 16% of adults worldwide were living with obesity, equating to about 1 in 8 people. The total number of people living with obesity (including children and adolescents) reached over 1 billion in 2022. Key statistics on global obesity, based primarily on 2022 data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC), include:
Total numbers: Over 1 billion people worldwide are obese, with nearly 880 million adults and 159 million children and adolescents affected.
Doubled prevalence: The global prevalence of adult obesity has more than doubled since 1990.
Overweight combined: When combined with overweight adults, the total number of adults with excess weight was 2.5 billion in 2022, representing 43% of the world’s adult population.
Child and adolescent obesity: The prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents (ages 5–19) has quadrupled since 1990.
